With a click of her heels and umbrella ready to take flight, Mary Poppins flies into the disorderly Banks homes. The children, misbehaving and stressed out parents all stop to gaze at the wonder of this miracle from the sky.
This is the highly anticipated musical, Mary Poppins which flies onto the stage, bringing the classic Disney movie to life.
“The process for the musical has been very exciting. We have a lot of fun elements in the show, so watching it all come together since Oct. has been amazing”, Dhani Sionee (Mary Poppins) said. “The company has been working really hard to adapt to set changes and making sure every element is presented.”
Responsibilities do not stop at onstage performances, but outside into the blackbox, where publicity and other technical aspects of the show work.
“Mary Poppins is a huge show with a need for passionate actors and technicians. I’m very passionate about theatre which is why I dedicate time and effort towards publicising the show,” Esmeralda Herrera Diaz said (Publicity Head).
Maintaining the relationship between technical work and staying onto of communication has played a crucial role in production.
“I think what has made this show more complicated is how new I am to the role of being in charge of a crew, communication and patience is something that has been hard for me to do along this process,” Herrera said. Since this is the largest show of the year, publicity needed to go big.”
While actors focus on their performances, an entire crew working behind the scenes works just as hard to make sure the show reaches their audience and runs smoothly.
“The progress has been interesting, it had its ups and downs but we pulled through and I think many people learned from it how to behave and do something serious like this, ” Garrett Torres (Police Man) said.
Ms. [Carey] Chuter was hired during the summer as a third director for musical and play production.
“It was difficult at first, many of us never worked with these new directors and some never even did a show, we learned the brains of the directors and adapted to what they want and how it’s been showing that we’re used to them,” Torres said.
From learning about their new directors to figuring out all the outs and ins of tech, this show has allowed the students to grow in new ways.
“Sound has been a joy to lead this year, my crew and I went through difficulty with mics not working but we came through and learnt new things”, Mia Smith (Sound Head) said. “I am so excited to watch this show be put on and see the wonderful elements all come together.”
