After recently becoming a UIL recognized sport in 2022, water polo is officially making its way to the Klein Oak swimming pool for the first time in school history.
“Hopefully we can win a few games while learning vital experiences from each game played to ultimately be better in future seasons,” Coach Gayle Gregory said.
The varsity will be made up of boys and girls who participate on the JV and varsity swim teams.
“I just thought it would be a really fun sport to put my swim skills to use in a more team setting,” sophomore Parker Robertson said. “And just being able to work as a team to score goals instead of swimming where it’s more individual.”
This season will be a learning experience for the players, as nobody on the team has played in a formal game yet.
“Everyone is new to the sport this season,” Coach Gregory said. “The team has a lot to learn regarding the rules while also being prepared physically for the game.”
Despite the nerves of the unknown, the players are looking forward to their first season.
“It’s going to be interesting to see how everybody does together as a team,” senior Elizabeth Wilson said.
Although it could be nerve-racking being the first ever team, the players aren’t concerned.
“I don’t really feel any pressure,” senior Addison Clements said. “My only expectation is really for us to have fun with it and try to get better.”
Being a sport some might be unfamiliar with, Coach Gregory wants to get the school to care about the new teams.
“I would like to continue building interest in the sport on campus,” Coach Gregory said. “Klein Oak Aquatics is also big about fostering sportsmanship and a sense of team and community spirit while having fun.”
The players want the new team to get off to a strong start.
“We’re the ones who have to set the precedent,” senior John Tuhanowski said.
