A special part of homecoming was to make sure everyone was included in the celebrations and anticipation of the big weekend bring students together to celebrate. One class chose to take their skills to the next level: the Floral Design students worked to make sure the Access students also enjoyed the Hoco festivities by making them mums to wear on game day.
“We did it last year and I really enjoyed it,” senior Genesis Gonzales said. “I love seeing their reactions last year and seeing their smiles.”
Not only were Floral Design students motivated to make sure all kids were celebrating homecoming, they also wanted to be able to build relationships with the Access students.
“I hope that my students take away a love for service and [bringing] joy to others through volunteering, as well [developing] a sense of pride and accomplishment from this experience,” Floral Design teacher John Garcia said. “Not only are they helping share school spirit but working together to have a greater impact.”
Being passionate about creating something beautiful could also make the item even more special for someone and that’s what the floral students were hoping to accomplish.
“I [love] doing things for other people in general,” senior Melanny Velazquez said. “It makes me happy being able to do something for someone else.”
Through the students’ attention to detail, the end result was sharing their creations with students who were proud to wear them.
”I look forward to seeing the students help deliver the mums,” Garcia said. “It was incredible seeing the joy it brought to the students and teachers and how happy the Floral students were in helping others.”
